GCCF REGISTRATION POLICY FOR ASIAN GROUP SHORTHAIR AND SEMI-LONGHAIR CATS

Agreed/effective June 2007

BREEDS PERMITTED IN THE PEDIGREES OF ASIAN GROUP SHORTHAIRS AND ASIAN GROUP SEMI-LONGHAIRS

NOTE: The cats of the Asian Group should have the same overall type as the Burmese cat (breed 27). The term "Burmese colour restriction" or "Burmese restriction" as used within this policy refers to cats which are homozygous for the recessive Burmese colour gene (cb). The term "full expression" refers to those cats which have one or two dominant genes for full colour (C-).

A. BURMESE:

Burmese (Breeds 27, 27a, 27b, 27c, 27d, 27e, 27f, 27g, 27h, 271) on the Full Register

B. ASIAN GROUP SHORTHAIRS

Asian Selfs and Torties: Asian (Burmese type) cats showing the full expression of the following 17 recognised colours: Black, Blue, Chocolate, lilac, Red, Cream, Caramel, Cinnamon, Fawn, Apricot, Black Tortie, Blue Tortie, Chocolate Tortie, Lilac Tortie, Caramel Tortie, Cinnamon Tortie, Fawn Tortie. Those cats showing Burmese colour restriction must be registered on the Reference Register as Asian Variants but are accepted in the pedigrees of Asian Shorthairs and Asian Semi-Longhairs.

Asian Smokes in all 17 colours both in Burmese colour restriction and full expression.

Asian Tabbies both Standard and Silver, in all 17 colours both in Burmese colour restriction and full Expression; the tabby pattern may be spotted, mackerel, classic or ticked.

Asian Shaded ("Burmilla"), both Standard and Silver, in all 17 colours both in Burmese colour restriction and full expression.

Asian Variants: Self and Tortie cats of all 17 Burmese restriction colours resulting from matings where one or both parents are Asian Shorthairs or where one parent is an Asian Semi-Longhair must be registered on the Reference Register as Asian Variants but are accepted in the pedigrees of Asian Shorthairs and Asian Semi-Longhairs.

C. ASIAN GROUP SEMI-LONGHAIRS:

Cats of Burmese type with a semi-longhair coat ("Tiffanies") in all of the above Burmese and Asian colours and patterns.

D. CHINCHILLAS:

Chinchillas (breed 10) on the Full or Supplementary* Registers. Allowed until 31 st December 2000, after which the restriction outlined in E below applies.

E. PERMITTED OUTCROSSES:

In developing the Asian Selfs/Torties, other breeds including non-pedigree cats have been used. However, from the date of this amendment (20.06.07) applications for registration as Asians from outside the permitted breeds will be accepted only if the following conditions pertaining to outcrosses are met:

  1. That they are cats of Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie breeds, Smoke breeds, Shaded breeds, or Tabby breeds known not to have a rex gene, hair deficient gene, white spotting gene, white gloving gene or the gene for Himalayan colour restriction.
  2. That the first cross is an Asian to a Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby and the offspring to be registered as Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type. The next generation to be mated to an Asian, Burmese or First generation Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type (bred as described above) to produce the second generation to be registered as Self/Tortie Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type, Two more generations to be mated back to Asian or Burmese to eventually produce the fourth generation which will be registered as Asian Self/Tortie, Smoke, Burmilla (Asian Shaded), Asian Tabby or Tiffanie, ego Asian x Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby cat.
  • 1st Generation = Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type. 1st Generation mated to Asian, Burmese or First Generation Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type (bred as described above) .
  • 2nd Generation = Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby or Asian type. 2nd Generation mated to Asian or Burmese.
  • 3rd Generation = Shorthair or Semi-Longhair Self/Tortie, Smoke, Shaded or Tabby of Asian type. 3rd Generation mated to Asian or Burmese.
  • 4th Generation - Asian Self/Tortie, Asian Smoke, Asian Shaded, Asian Tabby, or Tiffanie.
(NB Any breeds displaying the rex gene, hair deficient gene, white spotting gene, white gloving gene or the gene for Himalayan colour restriction are not permitted in the pedigrees of Asian Shorthairs or Asian Semi-Longhairs. Any cats used as a permitted outcross in the Asian breeding programme as detailed in Sections D or E above should be of blood type A and tested negative for Erythrocyte Pyruvate Kinase (PK) deficiency and/or Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). The above also applies to imported cats if they have permitted outcrosses within three generations. AI cats tested must be micro-chipped.

REGISTRATION POLICY

1. FULL REGISTER

Asian Shorthairs and Asian Semi-Longhairs with Full or Provisional recognition which have in their pedigrees within three generations only Asian Shorthairs (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs or Burmese on the Fun Register shall be registered on the Full Register, with the exception of those cats whose pedigree includes within three generations a cat with Preliminary recognition.

2. SUPPLEMENTARY REGISTER

Asian Shorthairs and Asian Semi-Longhairs with Full or Provisional recognition which have in their pedigrees within three generations only Asian Shorthairs (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs, Burmese on the Full Register or Chinchillas on the Full or Supplementary* Register shall be registered on the Supplementary Register.

3. EXPERIMENTAL REGISTER

Asian Shorthairs and Asian Semi-Longhairs with Preliminary recognition which have in their pedigrees within three generations only Asian Shorthairs (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs, Burmese on the Full Register or Chinchillas on the Full or Supplementary* Register shall be registered on the Experimental Register

4. REFERENCE REGISTER

Asian Shorthairs which do not yet have preliminary recognition but which have in their pedigree within three generations only Asian Shorthairs (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs, Burmese on the Full Register or Chinchillas on the Full or Supplementary* Register shall be registered on the Reference register as Asian Variants but shall be eligible to be considered as registered on the Experimental register in the event of preliminary recognition of their breed.

All Shorthair Self or Tortie cats of Burmese colour restriction resulting from matings where one or both parents are Asian Shorthairs or where one parent is an Asian Semi-Longhair, which have in their pedigrees within three generations only Asian Shorthairs (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs, Burmese on the Full Register or Chinchillas on the Full or Supplementary* Register, must be registered on the Reference Register as Asian Variants.

All cats of Asian Shorthair, Asian Semi-Longhair, Burmese or Chinchilla appearance which have in their pedigrees within three generations any breeds other than Asian Shorthair (including Asian Variants), Asian Semi-Longhairs, Burmese on the Full Register or Chinchillas on the Full or Supplementary* Register shall be registered on the Reference Register.

NOTE: All Red, Cream or Apricot Asians or cats of Asian type (as defined above)with one or more Tabby or Shaded parent(s) must be registered as Red, Cream or Apricot Tabbies or Shaded until proved otherwise. Cats may not be registered as Selfs or Smokes until test matings have proved them to be free of the agouti gene or they have been DNA tested and proved to be non-agouti (proof to be supplied with registration documentation). Any cat DNA tested must be micro-chipped.

No cat may be registered as a Tabby or Shaded unless it has an agouti parent.

In the case of cats imported into the GCCF register, no cat with a Tabby or Shaded within five generations may be registered as a Red, Cream or Apricot Self or Smoke unless either:

  1. the cat has been DNA tested and proved to be non-agouti or
  2. the cat as been proved by test mating to be non-agouti or
  3. there is a non-red, non-agouti cat breaking the line descending from the Tabby/Shaded, or
  4. Red, Cream or Apricot cat in the line descended from the Tabby/Shaded has to be proved by test matings to be non-agouti.

OVERSTAMPlNG: All Asian Shorthairs, Asian Variants or cats of Asian Type descended from matings with Asian Semi-Longhair, Chinchilla or permitted Semi-Longhair breeds shall be overstamped "may carry longhair" until proved otherwise by test matings.

* Only where the reason for Supplementary registration is that the Chinchilla has a Golden Persian (breed 54) background.
